Give your pet a chance – an appeal from the IPCA

In 2022, the National Animal Cruelty Helpline received 9,317 calls regarding instances of animal cruelty and concerns about animal safety and in the first quarter of this year, the IPCA has reportedly taken in almost 700 dogs. These are the highest rates ever recorded in Ireland of animal neglect so it poses the question: what is the cause?

The answer to this question is complex and embodies a number of socio economic problems encountered by many in recent years, however, here at Rosettes Pet Shop Swords, we thought it would be handy to share some ways you can care for your pet without breaking the bank.

Balanced Nutrition:

A vital aspect of pet care is nutrition. A well-balanced diet is key to maintaining your pet's health. Look for high-quality, budget-friendly pet food options. Opt for brands from your local pet shop in Dublin that offer a balance of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to meet your pet's nutritional needs. Supplements and treats should be given in moderation to avoid over-spending while maintaining their dietary requirements.

Preventative Care:

Preventing health issues can save you money in the long run. Regular check-ups with your veterinarian can help catch potential problems early. Ensure your pet is up to date on vaccinations and invest in flea and tick prevention. These measures can reduce the risk of costly treatments down the road.

Grooming at Home:

Professional grooming services can be pricey. Consider learning some basic grooming techniques at home. Brushing your pet regularly, cleaning their ears and teeth, and trimming their nails can be done easily with some practice. This not only saves money but also strengthens your bond with your pet.

Exercise and Mental Stimulation:

Regular exercise and mental stimulation are crucial for your pet's well-being. Take your dog for long walks, engage in interactive playtime, or provide them with puzzle toys. These activities can prevent obesity and costly health issues associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

DIY Toys and Enrichment:

Creating DIY toys and enrichment activities for your pet can be both cost-effective and fun. Items like cardboard boxes, old t-shirts, and PVC pipe can be transformed into entertaining toys, providing hours of enjoyment for your pet.

Home Cooked Meals:

For those with culinary skills, consider preparing homemade pet food using vet-approved recipes. This can be a cost-effective way to ensure your pet receives quality nutrition while tailoring their diet to their specific needs.

Training Your Pet:

Invest time in training your pet to follow basic commands and behave well. Proper training can prevent accidents, injuries, and damage to your home, ultimately saving you money in repairs and medical bills.
